Sasan Nouranian
Dr. Sasan Nouranian is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and
Associate Director for Research at the Center for Graphene Research and Innovation (CGRI)
at the University of Mississippi. His interdisciplinary research spans the design, simulation,
and fabrication of advanced composite materials with an emphasis on graphene and two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials.
Dr. Nouranian earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Mississippi State University (MSU) in 2011.
Following his doctoral studies, he joined the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems (CAVS) at MSU as a
Postdoctoral Associate, where he focused on computational modeling of complex materials for vehicular and
structural applications. In 2014, he joined the University of Mississippi as an Assistant Professor and
was promoted to Associate Professor in 2020.
His research contributions bridge theory and practice, ranging from molecular dynamics simulations of material
properties to the additive manufacturing of multifunctional nanocomposites. A central theme in his work is the
integration of graphene and other 2D materials into hybrid polymer composites for applications such as impact
mitigation, smart coatings, thermal management, and water filtration. He also leads efforts in developing composite
membranes and printed composite structures for high-performance and sustainable engineering solutions.
Dr. Nouranian is a recognized mentor and academic leader. He has supervised eight Ph.D. dissertations and four
Master’s theses, nurturing the next generation of engineers and scientists. His prolific publication record includes
over 70 peer-reviewed journal articles, reflecting a deep commitment to research excellence and scientific advancement.
At CGRI, Dr. Nouranian plays a key role in expanding collaborative research efforts and advancing the Center’s mission
of driving innovation in low-dimensional materials for both civilian and defense applications. His leadership fosters
synergistic projects in partnership with institutions like Argonne National Laboratory, Jackson State University, and
other research leaders in graphene science. His work continues to push the frontiers of nanomaterials and simulation-driven
design, contributing to resilient infrastructure, aerospace innovation, and advanced manufacturing.
